So this might be an odd post, but this summer Matthew and I have had a pretty irregular church/small group schedule missing them both for weeks on end due to the daze of new parent world, travel, etc. So we started re-reading My Utmost for His Highest again (it's been a staple on and off for us since high school) and found ourselves being challenged in some big ways. The September 1 reading was one that particularly took our attention...
"We must continually remind ourselves of the purpose of life. We are not destined to happiness, nor to health, but to holiness. Today we have far too may desires and interests, and our lives are being consumed and wasted by them. Many of them may be right, noble, and good, and may later be fulfilled, but in the meantime God must cause their importance to us to decrease. The only thing that truly matters is whether a person will accept the God who will make him holy. At all costs, a person must have the right relationship to God."
It goes on, and I highly recommend the reading (if you don't have the book, you can get the daily readings here: http://www.rbc.org/devotionals/my-utmost-for-his-highest/09/01/devotion.aspx?year=2009)
but we felt those words were a far cry from where our lives presently are. We were already learning about putting aside ourselves and all we want to do with Abigail, but this was a call to what we need to pursue.
We're TRYING to read them every day and have some quiet time too (which we haven't done for a while)... and we invite you to read a day here or there with us. Who knows, it might help us stay the course or even start some conversations between us all.
